Unit Planning Steps

To frame the lesson for yourself:
  • Begin with the end in mind
    • Review the Unit Test
    • Review the released test items from Lead4ward
    • Review the Performance Assessments in the IFD
  • Know Your Standards and the Purpose of the unit
    • Read the IFD
    • Read about the standards in the Enhanced TEKS Clarification Document
    • Keep in mind the Big Idea(s) and readiness standards you are addressing in the unit
  • Know what your kids need to be successful
    • Make a list of models/representations to use as you teach (Enhanced TEKS Clarification Doc)
    • Make a list of vocabulary to teach using Marzano’s six step process
    • Make decisions about activities, talking structures, and games that you will incorporate to shape and sharpen student understanding of vocabulary

To frame the lesson for your students:
  • Write the student friendly objectives: the Unit Understandings on the IFD are a great starting place!
  • Create anchor charts using the unit concepts, big ideas, or difficult concepts that students may need support to learn
  • Review the misconceptions and possible gaps (Implementation TAG Tool) then make a plan for addressing these
  • Locate resources to use in your lesson
  • Post and teach important vocabulary
  • Incorporate writing activities using your word wall
  • Reference and use the models and examples from the Enhanced TEKS Clarification Document
  • Make a plan for the final summary, culminating questions, and/or activity to use at the end of the period
